1. Checking PF Balance with UAN Number

The Universal Account Number is a 12-digit unique number that is allocated to every employee contributing toward EPF. It is a central repository for all EPF-related information about you. It helps in checking your formal balance, fund transferring, and initiating any claims.

a. How to Check PF Balance by UAN Number?

Verifying your EPF balance through UAN is less complicated. Follow these simple steps:-

• Become aware of the UAN value that has been activated. You can activate your UAN by visiting the EPFO website while linking your UAN with Aadhar and PAN.
• After successful activation of the UAN, visit the EPFO Member Passbook Portal and sign in with your UAN and password.
• After logging in, tap on the "View Passbook" option to check your EPF balance details.

From this UAN portal, you can check your EPF balance along with your statement and even track your contributions.

b. PF Balance Check Using the UMANG/EPFO App

The UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) app is a government initiative providing citizens with a way to access certain government services including EPF services. Checking your EPF balance through the UMANG app is quite simple. Here’s how you do it:

• Step 1: Download the UMANG app from Google Play or Apple Store.
• Step 2: After installation, please register with your mobile number.
• Step 3: Choose the "EPFO" option and choose "View Passbook" or "Track EPF Claim."
• Step 4: Login using your UAN, and you will have access to the EPF balance.

2. How To Check PF Balance Without a UAN Number?

In the absence of a UAN number, you can verify your PF balance by a variety of alternative means. The most frequently used methods are:

a. How to check my PF balance by SMS?

If your phone number is registered with the EPFO, it is still possible to check your PF balance without considering UAN. Send an SMS:

• Step 1: Send an SMS to 7738299899 in the format provided: EPFOHO UAN ENG.
• Step 2: Replace "ENG" with the first three letters of your preferred language (e.g., "HIN" for Hindi, "MAR" for Marathi, etc.).
• Step 3: You will receive an SMS with the EPF balance details shortly after sending it.

This method is very easy and quick.

b. How to Check my PF balance by a missed call?

For the checking of PF balances, EPFO has introduced a missed-call service. To check the PF balance: 

• Step 1: Call 9966044425 from the registered mobile number.
• Step 2: The call will automatically disconnect after two or three rings.
• Step 3: You will get an SMS giving details about your EPF balance.

This method is free of cost and does not require internet access, which makes it one of the simplest means of checking your PF balance.

c. How to Check PF Balance Without a Registered Mobile Number?

If you have not registered your mobile number with the EPFO, you will have to either get it registered in the EPF account by linking it online or visit the nearest EPFO office. You will be able to access the SMS or missed-call services once your mobile number is linked with the EPFO.

3. How to Check EPF Balance for Exempted Establishments?

Exempt establishments are those organizations whose employees are not required to contribute to the EPFO but have their provident fund schemes which must be approved by the EPFO. In the case that you work in an exempt establishment and want to find out how to check your EPF balance, you need to:

• Contact the HR department or the finance team of the organization for assistance.
• Ask if your organization has any other online interface to check EPF balance.
• Chances are that members cannot view their balances directly via the EPFO website or UMANG app since their respective data is retained by the exempted trust.

For those organizations, the employer should ideally provide a certain portal or offline mode to check the balance such that even withdrawal or transfer of EPF should be carried out through them.
